あいこ【相子】

1 〔無勝負･引きわけ〕 a tie; a draw; a drawn [an inconclusive] game [match, etc.].

●あいこになる be drawn; be tied; end in a draw [tie]; end without a [with no] result.

●じゃんけんぽんよ, あいこでしょ. Let's play [do] janken. Paper, stone, and scissors; oh, it's a draw, so we'll play [do] it again. <▲> 日本の風物について言っているので, このように説明しないと英語圏の人々にはわかりにくい. [⇒じゃんけん]

●あいこになる get [be] even 《with sb》; be quits 《with sb》

・これであいこになる. This will make us quits [even].

●さあこれであいこだ. Now we are quits [all square].

・お互い 10 万円の損だから, これでおあいこだね. We've each lost a hundred thousand yen, so I'd say we're quits.

〔(目下の者などを)引き立てること〕 patronage; favor; 〔業者･商店などに対する〕 custom; patronage. <▲> 日本語としては「ご愛顧」の形で用いられることが多い.

●愛顧に報いる[応える] repay sb's favor to one; show appropriate gratitude for sb's patronage

・長年のご愛顧に応えて感謝セールを実施中です. We are holding a sale to express our gratitude to our long-standing faithful customers. <▲> 英語には元来「感謝セール」, 「謝恩セール」に相当する表現はない.

●どうぞ末長くご愛顧のほどお願いいたします. We hope you will continue to favor us with your custom.

●愛顧を乞う request [《文》 solicit] sb's continued custom [patronage]

・愛顧を受ける receive sb's favors; receive favors from sb
